Bill Maher Honored with Mark Twain Prize, Event Marked by Jokes Aimed at Donald Trump

Comedian Bill Maher was awarded the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor over the weekend at the Kennedy Center, an event punctuated by multiple comedic references and criticisms directed at former President Donald Trump by Maher and other performers.

Comedic Tributes and Political Jest

During the ceremony, Maher participated in a skit with impressionist Matt Friend, who mimicked Trump. Friend, in character, questioned the decision to bestow the award upon Maher, stating, "Why are we giving this low-ratings lightweight jerk the Mark Twain Award?" The impersonation also included Friend performing what has been dubbed the "Trump dance."

Addressing the mock Trump, Maher quipped, "I know we’ve had our differences, but I’m finally getting an award. Can you just let me have my moment, give my speech, then you can go back to zinging me with all of your insults?"

Comedian Whitney Cummings also brought Trump into her routine, noting that the Kennedy Center could celebrate Maher "even though Trump is now the board chair of this venue." She then clarified that she had been cautioned against making jokes about the former president but asserted she was undeterred.

The removal of Trump's name from the Kennedy Center's facade occurred in June, following an appeals court's rejection of the board's attempt to overturn a judge's ruling mandating its removal. Actor Woody Harrelson alluded to this change when congratulating Maher, jokingly referring to the venue as "ironically at the Trump Kennedy Center," before correcting himself with, "No, all right, we fixed it."

Musical Commentary and Prior Controversies

The evening also featured musician John Mellencamp, who performed his hit song "Pink Houses." Mellencamp subtly injected politics into his rendition after singing the line, "to work in some high rise, and vacation down at the Gulf of Mexico!" He added, "...or whatever we’re calling it these days," a clear reference to Trump's past suggestion of renaming the body of water the "Gulf of America."

The relationship between Maher and Trump has seen its share of public exchanges, particularly in the past year when reports surfaced that the White House had initially attempted to prevent Maher from receiving the Mark Twain Prize.

Speaking on his "Club Random" podcast in late April, Maher expressed his anticipation for the award on June 28, remarking, "unless Trump f---s it up again, which is completely possible." He reflected on the reported attempts to block his honor, saying, "I loved it that they tried to block it. And, of course, I think he absolutely still could if he wanted to. So, I’m just thankful."

Maher offered a form of backhanded appreciation for the alleged opposition, interpreting the hostility as a testament to the seriousness with which Trump viewed their political sparring. "I love that, you know, he takes the game seriously. Like no, ‘I’m going to block this guy.’ I respect the move," Maher stated. He concluded, "But I know that on June 28th, it's going to happen. We're going to be at the Kennedy Center, and I couldn't be more appreciative, honestly."

During his acceptance speech on Sunday, Maher noted his extensive career, having been nominated for more than 40 Emmy Awards without a win. He humorously posed the question to the audience, "Is it something I said?" before answering his own query with, "It’s everything I said."
