Blue Jackets Coach Expresses Shock Over Zach Werenski's Trade Request
Columbus Blue Jackets head coach Brad Bowness shared his astonishment regarding star defenseman Zach Werenski's desire for a trade, despite a recent Norris Trophy win.

The current National Hockey League offseason has taken an unusual turn, with discussions frequently revolving around players who have formally requested trades rather than those set to enter the open market. Among the most surprising of these developments is the news concerning Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Zach Werenski.
Werenski, who recently secured the Norris Trophy as the league's top blueliner, informed General Manager Don Waddell of his wish to depart the team, a revelation that has sent ripples through the hockey world.
Coach Bowness's Reaction to Unexpected News
The request came as such a shock that even the team's head coach, Brad Bowness, was caught off guard by the news.
"I’m as shocked as anyone that these came up," Bowness stated. "I mean, at the end of the year meetings, we looked each other in the eye and had great meetings and gave each other a hug leaving, and all that. So everything was good. So when all of this broke, I was shocked and caught off-guard like everyone else."
Werenski, whose current contract with the Blue Jackets extends through the 2027-28 season, is not the sole player seeking a change of scenery. Forward Kirill Marchenko has also reportedly communicated his desire to be traded from the team.
Despite the similar requests, Werenski's situation, particularly coming so soon after receiving a prestigious individual award, stands out as a significant surprise.
Assessing the Blue Jackets' Season and Player Value
While the Blue Jackets' previous season concluded in a disappointing manner, ultimately costing them a postseason berth, the team had shown promising flashes throughout much of the campaign. Head coach Bowness's impassioned address following the regular season was likely intended to ignite a strong response from his players.
However, it appears this message did not resonate with at least two key members of the roster. Although a star player requesting a trade, especially a Norris Trophy winner, is generally not an ideal scenario for any franchise, Werenski's recent accolade significantly bolsters his trade value.
Should the Blue Jackets successfully negotiate a deal, they are in a position to command a substantial return. Defensemen of Werenski's caliber are a rare commodity in the league, making him a highly sought-after asset on the trade market.
