49ers' Handling of Brandon Aiyuk Questioned Amid Prolonged Standoff
Wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk's future with the San Francisco 49ers remains in doubt as he continues to be absent from training camp, drawing criticism from former NFL players.

The status of Brandon Aiyuk remains one of the San Francisco 49ers' most pressing unresolved issues as the team commenced training camp. With no new information provided by the organization, the next action appears to rest with the All-Pro wide receiver.
Aiyuk has been listed on the reserve/left squad list since the conclusion of the 2025 season. Having missed the entirety of the previous season due to a protracted disagreement with the 49ers, he would likely need to seek reinstatement from the NFL before any potential return in 2026. Alternatively, Aiyuk could advance the process by reporting to training camp or formally communicating his intention to do so to the 49ers. The relationship between Aiyuk and the team has been tense for approximately a year.
Contractual Tensions and Injury Fallout
The dispute seemingly intensified last July when San Francisco rescinded the remaining guaranteed funds in his contract. This action followed Aiyuk's failure to participate in rehabilitation activities for significant injuries to his right knee, including a torn ACL, MCL, and meniscus.
Aiyuk has frequently alluded to the uncertainty surrounding his tenure with the 49ers through various social media posts, further fueling speculation. Among the prominent figures to comment on the situation is former NFL wide receiver Roddy White.
I believe this situation has been handled improperly by the 49ers. They should have exercised more patience with Aiyuk and his circumstances. They ought to have done everything possible to get him back on the field, allowing him an opportunity to demonstrate he can still perform. When you have a player who is frustrated and simply wants to leave, securing fair compensation for him becomes very difficult.
White, who concluded his 11-year career with the Atlanta Falcons, accumulated 10,863 regular-season receiving yards.
Player Reactions and Team Focus
The 49ers' decision last week to re-sign Deebo Samuel appeared to elicit a cryptic response from Aiyuk, who posted on Instagram,
