Former Kansas Jayhawks Guard and Washburn Coach Brett Ballard Seriously Injured in Topeka Crash

Brett Ballard, the esteemed head coach of Washburn University's men's basketball team and a former standout player for the Kansas Jayhawks, is currently hospitalized with severe injuries after being involved in a single-vehicle collision Tuesday evening.

The incident occurred while Ballard, 46, was driving his 2024 Ford F-150.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the accident took place just after 8:15 p.m. as Ballard was traveling westbound on Interstate 470 in Topeka. His pickup truck reportedly veered off the left side of the roadway, striking a delineator post. The vehicle then proceeded into a steep embankment before colliding with a concrete bridge pillar, resulting in extensive damage.

Ballard was the sole occupant of the truck and was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash. Emergency responders transported him to Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka for medical attention.

Community Rallies Around Coach Ballard

Washburn University President JuliAnn Mazachek issued a statement, asking the university community to keep Coach Ballard and his family in their thoughts during this challenging time.

"We are deeply saddened to share that Coach Brett Ballard was seriously injured in a car accident last evening," Mazachek stated. "Our hearts are with Coach Ballard, his family, the men's basketball program and all who are affected during this difficult time."

A Distinguished Career in Kansas Basketball

Ballard holds a prominent place within Kansas basketball circles, having built a distinguished career as both a player and a coach. A native of Hutchinson, he played as a guard for the Kansas Jayhawks from 2000 to 2002 under legendary coach Roy Williams.

Following his playing career, Ballard transitioned into coaching, serving for seven seasons as an assistant on Bill Self's coaching staff at the University of Kansas.

For the past nine seasons, Ballard has been at the helm of the Washburn Ichabods, transforming the program into one of the most consistently successful teams in NCAA Division II.

Under his leadership, the Ichabods have achieved an impressive 198-81 overall record, secured multiple NCAA Tournament berths, and established themselves as a formidable contender within the MIAA conference.

Before his tenure at Washburn, Ballard also gained valuable head coaching experience at Baker University. There, he guided the Wildcats to a Heart of America Athletic Conference regular-season championship and a coveted appearance in the NAIA national tournament.
