Massachusetts City Imposes Curfew Ahead of Historic World Cup Soccer Match

The city of Brockton, Massachusetts, home to one of the largest Cape Verdean populations in the United States, implemented a temporary curfew in anticipation of Friday's significant World Cup soccer match pitting the West African country against Argentina.

This restriction in Brockton, situated south of Boston, was scheduled to begin at 10 p.m. on Friday and conclude at 5 a.m. on Saturday.

Reasons Behind the Curfew

Municipal authorities stated that the decision stemmed from previous World Cup festivities that had resulted in hazardous and illegal activities. According to a statement from the city, past celebrations associated with the World Cup have included reckless driving, unauthorized street gatherings, acts of vandalism, assaults, illegal fireworks use, disorderly conduct, and various other criminal offenses.

Brockton boasts a significant Cape Verdean population, with reports from The Enterprise indicating that almost a quarter of its residents identify as Cape Verdean.

The Friday match was projected to ignite widespread celebrations, given that the 2026 tournament represents the first time the island nation of Cape Verde has qualified for the FIFA World Cup.

After earlier World Cup contests, Brockton police reported multiple injuries from shootings that occurred amidst post-game festivities, as documented by Boston 25 News. These events spurred city officials to enact the temporary curfew prior to Friday's game.

Curfew Specifics and Exceptions

Under the curfew stipulations, no one was permitted to enter any establishment serving alcoholic beverages after 7 p.m. Existing patrons could stay until 10 p.m., but all orders for alcoholic drinks, or "last calls," were required to cease by 9:30 p.m.

The city clarified that only a select number of exceptions to the curfew would be permitted. These exceptions encompassed law enforcement personnel, first responders, individuals commuting directly to or from their legal employment, those requiring medical attention, and anyone responding to emergency situations.

Community and Safety Message

Officials in Brockton characterized the measure as a crucial public safety initiative designed to uphold public order. The city's statement outlined the curfew's objectives: "The purpose of this curfew is to protect public safety, reduce criminal activity associated with post-match celebrations, and enable police, fire, and emergency personnel to effectively maintain order and respond to emergencies."

Both residents and visitors were strongly encouraged to "celebrate responsibly, obey all laws, avoid unlawful gatherings, and cooperate with public safety officials to ensure that all World Cup celebrations remain peaceful and safe."
