Caitlin Clark's Return Falls Flat as Fever Coach Limits Minutes in Loss to Short-Handed Sparks
Despite anticipation for her comeback, Caitlin Clark's playing time was restricted by her coach, contributing to the Fever's significant defeat against an undermanned Los Angeles team.

All attention was on Caitlin Clark as she made her eagerly awaited comeback from injury during an away game in Los Angeles on Wednesday night. However, her return did not culminate in a triumphant performance. Instead, the Indiana Fever found themselves trailing the Los Angeles Sparks throughout the entire contest, as Clark's challenging return coincided with a decisive 106-92 defeat.
The standout player struggled to find her rhythm, appearing out of sync in her first game back from a back ailment.
Clark's Restricted Comeback
A significant factor contributing to Clark's disjointed outing was head coach Stephanie White's decision to severely limit her playing time, restricting her to only 16 minutes on the court. This conservative, stop-and-go approach likely hindered any opportunity for the young star to establish consistent momentum during the game.
By the end of the night, Clark recorded 9 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists. Her plus-minus rating of minus-16 underscored the team's struggles during her time on the floor.
Sparks Capitalize on Opportunity
Adding to the Indiana Fever's difficulties, the Los Angeles Sparks were notably understaffed for the matchup, competing without key players Kelsey Plum and Cameron Brink. Despite their depleted roster, the Sparks played with a clear objective to win, while Indiana appeared to be overly cautious with its most valuable player.
With Clark on a minutes restriction and Aliyah Boston absent from the lineup, Kelsey Mitchell was left to carry the primary offensive responsibilities. Mitchell delivered a strong performance, scoring 29 points and converting 5-of-9 attempts from beyond the arc.
Nevertheless, even Mitchell's impressive scoring was insufficient to counter an efficient Los Angeles squad. The Sparks demonstrated strong perimeter shooting, hitting 45% of their three-point attempts, going 9-of-20 from deep, which propelled them to their 106-92 victory.
Following Wednesday's loss to an undermanned Sparks team, questions have emerged regarding the effectiveness of Indiana's extremely cautious strategy. The Fever's season record now stands at 12-9. Looking ahead, Coach White plans to rest Clark for Thursday's game against the Mercury, while Aliyah Boston is expected to rejoin the team.
