California Man Pleads Guilty to Fatal Revenge Rampage, Killing Four and Torching Home

A California man, driven by a desire for retribution following a relationship breakup, waited for his former boyfriend's family to go to sleep before entering their residence, fatally shooting four individuals, and then setting the house on fire, according to prosecutors.

Miguel Diego Sandoval, 21, has entered a guilty plea for the November 2024 massacre that occurred inside a Lancaster home. The victims were identified as Janvi Maquindang, 21, Christine Aca-ac, 25, Edwin Garcia, 24, and Matthew Montebello, 21.

"The defendant was jilted when he broke up with his boyfriend and then did something unimaginable when he killed four innocent people," stated Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman.

Hochman further remarked, "This was a calculated act of violence that left a void for the victims’ families that can never be filled. Rest assured this guilty plea will result in a lifetime prison sentence."

Details of the Violent Attack

The deadly assault was reportedly instigated by the dissolution of Sandoval’s relationship with Aca-ac and Maquindang’s brother, with prosecutors asserting that he sought revenge.

On November 16, 2024, Sandoval reportedly lingered outside the North Tabler Avenue residence until the occupants had retired for the night, prosecutors detailed. He then gained entry and opened fire, claiming the lives of the four victims.

Following the shootings, Sandoval set the home ablaze and fled the scene, according to prosecutorial accounts.

Amidst the chaos, a 16-year-old victim, trapped within a locked bedroom, managed to dial 911. Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies, responding to reports of the burning residence, successfully rescued the teenager.

Tragically, three cherished family dogs were also killed during the incident, leading to three felony counts of animal cruelty being filed against Sandoval.

Legal Ramifications and Plea Agreement

Sandoval's guilty plea includes four counts of first-degree murder, encompassing special-circumstance allegations of multiple murders and murder by means of lying in wait.

He also confessed to attempted murder, first-degree residential burglary, and arson of an inhabited structure or property. Additionally, he pleaded guilty to two counts of child abuse under circumstances likely to cause great bodily injury or death.

This guilty plea ensures that Sandoval will remain incarcerated for the rest of his life, facing a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. His sentencing is scheduled for November 17.

Victims Remembered by Loved Ones

Fundraising pages established by the victims’ families after the 2024 killings depict the profound loss of four young lives and the enduring grief experienced by their loved ones.

Christine and Edwin were engaged and had been planning their future together, according to a crowdfunding campaign organized by Christine’s sister. The fundraiser honored Christine as a humorous, energetic, and profoundly caring older sister who had served as the legal guardian and protector for her younger siblings.

The same fundraiser described Janvi, Christine’s brother, as a brilliant and accomplished young man who had graduated as his high school class valedictorian. His younger siblings viewed him as an inspirational role model they could always depend on.

While the younger siblings physically survived the attack, they lost Christine and Janvi, as well as their home in the ensuing fire. The fundraiser was later expanded to assist them in finding a safe new residence, continuing their education, and rebuilding their lives.

Matthew had celebrated his 21st birthday just days before the shooting, as written by his older brother, Andrew Montebello, on a separate crowdfunding page. According to the fundraiser, Matthew sustained a gunshot wound to the head, was rushed from the scene, and fell into a coma. His family held onto hope for positive news, but it never came.

Andrew characterized his younger brother as gifted, intelligent, and perpetually curious, noting that Matthew would immerse himself in learning new skills until he mastered them or moved on to his next pursuit.

In another online fundraiser, Edwin’s mother, Yemi Olivares, remembered her 24-year-old son, known to his family as Fernando or Fer, as a gentle individual who aspired to become an educator in both academics and music. She wrote that her son dreamed of marriage, fatherhood, and teaching future generations.

"As a mother, I am completely and utterly devastated," Olivares wrote on the fundraising page.
