While the Indiana Hoosiers enter the season as defending national champions, having completed a dominant 16-0 campaign and bolstered their roster with another impressive transfer class under coach Curt Cignetti, many observers anticipated the Big Ten Championship race would primarily involve the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Oregon Ducks.
Early Contenders: Ohio State's Dominance and Oregon's Close Call
Ohio State certainly lived up to its billing, securing a thoroughly dominant victory over Ball State. Although not a top-tier opponent, the Buckeyes, ranked number one nationally, executed precisely as expected in their season opener. Oregon, however, navigated a much different path.

The Ducks' passing game was efficient, tallying 378 yards on 28 completions from 38 attempts, averaging 10 yards per pass attempt. Defensively, they recorded three sacks and four tackles for loss. While the margin was narrow, Oregon supporters can take encouragement from a performance that statistically warranted a more decisive outcome.
