DSA Co-Chair Clarifies Democratic Socialism Vision, Addresses Soviet Union Comparisons

Ashik Siddique, co-chair of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), recently defended the organization against historical comparisons to the Soviet Union while simultaneously articulating a progressive vision aimed at making law enforcement and correctional facilities “less necessary” within the United States.

During an appearance on "The Will Cain Show" on Wednesday, Siddique stated, "Our goal is democratic socialism, which we think is distinct from the Soviet Union, which ended decades ago."

Defining Democratic Socialism

Siddique’s remarks come at a time when socialist ideologies are gaining traction within the Democratic Party. Socialist-aligned candidates have secured significant primary victories, in some instances unseating long-standing Democratic incumbents.

For example, all three congressional candidates endorsed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani—Brad Lander, Claire Valdez, and Darializa Avila Chevalier—emerged victorious in their respective Democratic primaries. This outcome underscores a growing acceptance of the progressive movement’s principles within the party’s ranks.

"We're winning candidates all over the country and uniting people across differences. The DSA is led by working-class people across the country," Siddique informed host Will Cain, highlighting the organization's national reach and grassroots leadership.

The increasing prominence of socialist ideas has drawn renewed warnings from former President Donald Trump, who recently characterized socialism’s expanding influence within the Democratic Party as the "biggest threat" to America since its founding in 1776.

Conversely, many prominent Democrats have welcomed candidates who align with the movement, often asserting that the Democratic Party is a "big tent" coalition capable of accommodating diverse viewpoints.

Siddique echoed this sentiment, explaining, "We have a big tent of all sorts of ordinary people who have many different ideas about what the pathway is or what the horizon is."

Economic Vision and Border Policy

The DSA champions a range of policy proposals, including universal Medicare, tuition-free college for all students, and a reduced 32-hour work week.

When questioned about the DSA’s stance on open borders, Siddique contended that the U.S. already operates with "open borders for capitalists" and corporate executives.

"We have people who've run major companies that have hollowed out cities all over the country, taking jobs out of communities, outsourcing jobs, pushing trade deals that are bad for workers," the DSA co-chair elaborated.

The DSA’s official website explicitly states its position: "Capitalism is a system designed by the owning class to exploit the rest of us for their own profit. We must replace it with democratic socialism."

Regarding immigration, Siddique clarified, "We would not have open borders tomorrow, but we want a world in which all working people are taken care of."
