Ex-Detective Paroled Early from 102-Year Sentence Faces New Charges in 32-Year-Old Cold Case

A former Los Angeles vice detective, who received a 102-year prison sentence three decades ago for numerous rape convictions, was recently taken into custody again. Michael Douglas Brambles, 77, had been released on parole in 2020 under a specific California statute.

The Ventura County District Attorney’s Office has charged Brambles, aged 77, with kidnapping to commit robbery, alleging personal use of a firearm. These charges relate to a reported robbery and sexual assault incident.

Prosecutors have also cited several aggravating factors in the case. These include assertions that the crime involved significant violence, targeted a particularly vulnerable victim, demonstrated planning or professionalism in its execution, and that Brambles' actions indicated a serious risk to public safety, according to the District Attorney's office.

Re-arrest and New Allegations

The current allegations stem from an incident at Arabella’s Boutique in Thousand Oaks, California. It is claimed that Brambles entered the store as a woman, identified as SW, was preparing to close. He allegedly brandished a handgun, compelled her into a backroom, tied her hands, and sexually assaulted her. Additionally, he is accused of taking items from the business before departing.

Due to the expiration of the statute of limitations, charges specifically for sexual assault related to this incident cannot be filed.

Decades-Old Case Resurfaces

Following the 1992 incident, Brambles was identified as a suspect. However, he was already facing prosecution for numerous other robberies and sexual assaults. He was ultimately convicted on 26 charges, encompassing 18 armed robberies and multiple sexual assaults, leading to his 102-year sentence. Consequently, the case involving SW was dismissed, a decision she accepted at the time, under the assumption that Brambles would remain incarcerated for life.

Nevertheless, Brambles became eligible to seek parole in 2020, leveraging a California statute that permits elderly incarcerated individuals to apply for release. During his parole hearing, he reportedly denied committing sexual assault against any women beyond the specific cases for which he had already been convicted in Los Angeles County.

The Ventura County District Attorney’s Office investigators revisited SW’s cold case as part of the federal Sexual Assault Kit Initiative. During this review, they discovered that Brambles had been paroled. He was arrested on Wednesday and is currently held in Ventura County on a $2 million bail.
