Jayden Daniels Faces Widespread Online Mockery Amid LSU Jersey Number Feud
Washington Commanders rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels has become the subject of extensive social media jesting following reports of a dispute with his former university, LSU, over his collegiate jersey number.

Before the upcoming regular season has even commenced, Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels is already contending with significant pressure, albeit from online sources rather than opposing defenses.
The Heisman Trophy winner, who previously played for LSU, has drawn widespread attention and jest on social media platforms. This follows reports that Daniels' representatives issued a cease-and-desist letter to his alma mater regarding the use of his name, image, and likeness.
The reported core of the disagreement centers on LSU's decision to allow incoming player DJ Pickett to wear the No. 5 jersey, a number famously worn by Daniels during his successful tenure with the Tigers in 2023. Daniels' camp reportedly viewed this move as "disrespectful."
Sports World Joins the Online Merriment
Among the various entities that have publicly commented on the situation, the New York Mets baseball team weighed in. Following their 4-1 victory over the Washington Nationals — a team, like the Commanders, based in the broader DMV area — the Mets posted a notable message on X.
Stopped at 4 out of respect for Jayden Daniels
The ticketing platform StubHub also engaged in the online commentary, humorously stating in a post on X that it would "no longer offer tickets in groups of five out of respect for Daniels."
Daniels Addresses the Controversy
On Thursday afternoon, Daniels himself issued a statement on social media, aiming to clarify his position and refocus public attention.
I have been locked in on training camp and that's been my number one focus. I have a lot of gratitude for my time at LSU and I'm proud of what my teammates and I accomplished there. Obviously there are issues to be worked out between my team and LSU and my hope is that it will get done privately. My sole personal focus is on Commanders' football. I realize the business of football is unique and I trust this can all be resolved.
Despite Daniels' attempt to de-escalate the situation and shift focus to his professional commitments, the online reactions have persisted. The former LSU star likely hopes that by the time the NFL regular season begins, the only blitzes he encounters will be on the football field.
