An 18-year-old from Oakdale, southwest of Sydney, was discovered in remote bushland following an eight-day search, with officials yet to determine the cause of death.

An extensive eight-day search for a missing young person in a secluded national park in Australia has concluded with a devastating outcome for a grieving family.
Authorities have confirmed that an 18-year-old Australian hiker was discovered deceased in dense bushland. Lily Hooper, a teenager from Oakdale, a community situated southwest of Sydney, had embarked on a hike in Nattai National Park before her disappearance on August 12.
A body, believed to be Hooper's, was located within the bushland of Nattai National Park. New South Wales Police described the park's location as approximately 37 miles northwest of Mittagong.
The official cause of death has not yet been determined or publicly released by authorities.
Search Efforts Culminate in Tragic Discovery
Hooper's vehicle was found at the Bonnum Pic trailhead on the evening she was reported missing. The exhaustive week-long search operation concluded on a Thursday morning when "the body of a woman was located in bushland," according to NSW Police statements.
"While formal identification is still pending, the body is believed to be that of the 18-year-old woman," police stated late last week, indicating that a report would be prepared for the coroner's office.
The discovery was made by a volunteer around 11:30 a.m. on Thursday. However, an initial communication lapse led Hooper's family to mistakenly believe she had been found alive, explained New South Wales Police Assistant Commissioner Joseph Cassar.
"They were given initial information that the searchers believed she was alive, and that's what was communicated," Cassar informed reporters. "Within eight to 10 minutes we were able to give them an update, which was a more accurate account."
Tributes and Family's Grace Amidst Grief
Hooper's untimely death resonated across Australia, drawing comments from prominent political figures and leading to a moment of silence observed in Parliament.
"The tragedy of a parent losing a young one ... is an unspeakable tragedy," Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese remarked. "Lily had so much more to offer the world."
Lily Hooper's father, Jim Hooper, expressed his gratitude towards the emergency personnel for their dedicated efforts in locating his daughter. He also extended his forgiveness to the police and all involved regarding the initial miscommunication about her being found alive.
"Their hearts and their efforts — I couldn't knock it," he shared.
Nattai National Park and Hiking Safety
Nattai National Park is renowned for its challenging hiking trails, dramatic sandstone cliffs, and expansive bushland, as described by the New South Wales National Parks and Wildlife Service.
The agency issues specific warnings to hikers, advising that cliff edges can be unstable or obscured by vegetation, weather conditions can change rapidly, and many national parks experience limited mobile phone reception.
Officials strongly recommend that individuals carry personal locator beacons (PLBs) when venturing into remote wilderness areas.
"Many national parks in NSW don't have mobile phone coverage," the service's website states. "If you're planning a walk in a remote area, bring a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) as an added safety precaution."
A Series of Recent Outdoor Tragedies
Hooper's death marks another in a series of fatal hiking and climbing incidents recorded in recent months.
- Earlier this month, accomplished rock climber Jake Whisenant, 30, died following an accident in California's Sierra Nevada region.
- In June, an 18-year-old hiker succumbed to heat-related symptoms while traversing the Bright Angel Trail in the Grand Canyon.
