Actor Mel Gibson issued an apology Monday following the emergence of video footage that showed him seemingly mimicking a sign language interpreter during a public appearance.
The incident took place on Saturday at the Fan Expo Canada panel in Toronto, held at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. Gibson, aged 70, was observed waving to attendees before seemingly making gestures behind an American Sign Language (ASL) translator present on stage.
"There was no intended maliciousness attached, and I certainly apologize to anyone who was upset by it."
Public Reaction to the On-Stage Moment
The actor's actions during his panel discussion, titled "From Braveheart to Mad Max: A Q&A with Mel Gibson," quickly prompted a wave of reactions across social media platforms.
- One user commented on the unexpected nature of the behavior, writing, "This choice is bonkers to me. Interpreter just doing their job, people clapping for you, positive vibes ... Mel Gibson: makes fun of ASL interpreter for no reason at all. What dysfunction causes a brain to need to be casually cruel for no reason?"
- Another individual responded, suggesting a lack of maturity rather than malice: "It’s dumb silly stupid and disrespectful sure. But why is it cruel? He’s a ten year old boy who never grew up trying to be funny."
- A third user, in a post that has since been removed, expressed personal dismay, stating, "Always disappointing to see my language mocked. We work hard to get our language recognized and be taken seriously."
However, not all reactions were entirely negative. Some online observers viewed the situation differently.
- In a video circulating, one social media user remarked, "I’ve seen tons of comedians do that. People are way too caught up in their feelings."
- Another user offered a more cynical observation, noting the incident as the "Least controversial Mel Gibson incident."
Beyond the Incident: Film and Political Appointments
During the event, Gibson also confirmed his active involvement in the editing and post-production phases of his upcoming film, "The Resurrection of the Christ," which is being worked on in Toronto.
Looking ahead to 2025, former President Donald Trump announced Gibson as one of three special envoys designated to promote business within Hollywood.
"It is my honor to announce Jon Voight, Mel Gibson, and Sylvester Stallone, to be Special Ambassadors to a great but very troubled place, Hollywood, California," Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform. "They will serve as Special Envoys to me for the purpose of bringing Hollywood, which has lost much business over the last four years to Foreign Countries, BACK—BIGGER, BETTER, AND STRONGER THAN EVER BEFORE!" He further added, "These three very talented people will be my eyes and ears, and I will get done what they suggest. It will again be, like The United States of America itself, The Golden Age of Hollywood!"
The "Mad Max" actor expressed surprise upon learning of his new role but indicated his readiness to assist the administration as needed.
