The Washington County Sheriff’s Office in Oregon has reported the arrest of at least 34 individuals following a successful bait bike operation designed to apprehend suspected thieves. This initiative targeted property theft, deploying specially equipped bicycles in strategic locations.

The program commenced in mid-April 2026, focusing on Aloha, a community situated west of Portland. Authorities placed these customized bikes in various spots, particularly in high-traffic areas known for frequent thefts. This strategy aimed to deter and catch individuals involved in stealing bicycles.

Operation Details and Effectiveness

In less than three months, the tactic proved highly effective. The bait bikes were repeatedly stolen and subsequently recovered swiftly by deputies, directly leading to numerous arrests. A statement from the sheriff’s office highlighted the operation's success, noting,

The program utilized standard mountain bikes secretly outfitted with GPS tracking devices and alarms. These bikes were strategically positioned in areas where the likelihood of theft was higher. Deputies working overnight shifts, often referred to as graveyard deputies, were responsible for monitoring these bikes. This continuous oversight allowed for rapid response once a bait bike was taken.

The sheriff’s office explained the alert system:

When the bike is taken, the alarm notifies the deputies monitoring the beacon, and they move in to recover the stolen bike.

The operation has led to nearly three dozen arrests. Investigations revealed that several of the apprehended suspects were either wanted on outstanding arrest warrants or were found to be in possession of controlled substances at the time of their arrest.
