Philadelphia's 'Salute to Independence' Parade Canceled Amid Extreme Heat Warning

Philadelphia's "Salute to Independence Semiquincentennial Parade," an event planned for Friday as part of national 250th anniversary celebrations, has been canceled due to extreme heat forecasts for the city.

Welcome America Inc., the organizing body, announced the cancellation on social media, a notice subsequently shared by the City of Philadelphia. The statement indicated that the "Salute to Independence Semiquincentennial Parade is cancelled" because of the severe weather conditions.

Record-Breaking Temperatures Expected

Forecasters from the National Weather Service Philadelphia/Mount Holly office issued a warning Friday morning, noting that if the Philadelphia International Airport reached its projected high of 104 degrees Fahrenheit that day, it would mark the highest temperature recorded at that location since July 3, 1966.

In response to the dangerous conditions, City Health Commissioner Dr. Palak Raval-Nelson extended a "Heat Health Emergency" for the city, which is now set to remain in effect until 8 p.m. on Sunday, according to information released by the city's Department of Public Health.

The parade was designed to feature a variety of floats and marching bands, as detailed in its event description. However, Michael DelBene, President and CEO of Welcome America Inc., underscored that the well-being of attendees and participants takes precedence over celebratory events.

"While large-scale celebrations and community events may be our mission, our first responsibility will always be to the safety and security of our staff, our guests, and our event participants," DelBene stated, emphasizing the organization's commitment to safety during the heatwave.
