Rory McIlroy Criticizes Bryson DeChambeau's Conduct at The Open, Calling Actions 'Performative'

Rory McIlroy delivered pointed remarks Saturday at The Open during a press conference, expressing significant disapproval of fellow competitor Bryson DeChambeau's actions.

McIlroy, 37, spoke candidly when questioned about DeChambeau's conduct from Friday, which saw the 32-year-old incur a two-stroke penalty after an extended and contentious exchange with rules officials, long after his round had concluded.

"I won’t pretend to be up here and defend Bryson," McIlroy informed reporters following his third-round score of 1-under 69. "I’m not particularly fond of him. I think a lot of it is performative. I think a lot of it’s for attention. To hold the tournament hostage like that and to have all of us — players, volunteers, everyone — waiting on him to depart, I didn’t feel like it was a great look."

The Disputed Penalty Incident

The reigning two-time Masters champion stated he had no reservations that DeChambeau had improved the area for his backswing, asserting that his actions "didn’t seem right."

"I think there’s no doubt that he improved the line of his backswing," McIlroy elaborated. "Again, it’s like, whether it was careless or whether it was intentional, I don’t think it matters. Hopefully, it was careless, but I think the two-shot penalty was justified, for sure."

Mixed Reactions from Other Golfers

While McIlroy was unequivocal in his critique, some other golfers showed more empathy toward DeChambeau. Former Open champion Xander Schauffele described the situation as unfortunate.

"He said he didn’t do it intentionally, and it’s unfortunate that he got penalized because he was playing incredibly well, and obviously he’s still playing incredibly well," Schauffele commented. "So, he’s obviously going to have something to prove these next two days."

DeChambeau's Performance and Tournament Standings

DeChambeau responded to the two-stroke penalty with a solid third round, carding a 1-under par to conclude the day at 6-under for the entire tournament. He currently trails leader Sam Burns by four strokes, with Burns holding a 10-under total after shooting 5-under par on Saturday.

Should DeChambeau finish within two strokes of the eventual winner on Sunday, discussions surrounding his two-stroke penalty are likely to persist.

Meanwhile, McIlroy is currently tied for 30th at 2-under par for the tournament. He would require an exceptional final round and considerable assistance from other players to position himself for contention on Sunday.
