Serena Williams Calls Anti-Doping Protocols "Grueling" and "Unreasonable" Ahead of Wimbledon Comeback
Tennis icon Serena Williams expressed strong dissatisfaction with the anti-doping testing process required for her return to professional play, labeling it "unprofessional" and a significant hurdle.

Tennis icon Serena Williams is set to compete in women’s singles at Wimbledon for the first time since 2022, having secured a wild card entry into the prestigious tournament. She will also participate in the doubles event alongside her sister, Venus, marking their first joint appearance there since 2016.
Her path back to elite professional tennis involved a comprehensive re-entry into the sport's anti-doping monitoring program. When questioned about this process on Sunday, the 44-year-old tennis legend characterized the system as both "unprofessional" and "unreasonable."
Williams Expresses Frustration with Testing Protocols
Williams described the anti-doping regimen as "grueling." She highlighted recent rule adjustments she found confusing. "They changed the rules now. I didn’t know some of the rules. So apparently if you miss a test outside of your window, it still counts as missed. I’m like, I guess I can’t go pick up my kids," she explained.
She continued, expressing her strong disapproval: "It’s unprofessional. I hate it. I think it’s necessary, but I think a lot of the stuff, if I want to go places outside of my window, I should be able to go without having it count as a missed test."
The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) mandates that players provide their daily "whereabouts" information to facilitate no-notice drug testing. This particular aspect of the anti-doping framework has recently attracted considerable scrutiny within the tennis community.
Williams reiterated her view that the entire process is "unreasonable."
"That was a big reason why I didn’t want to come back either because it’s just so hard. I mean, my life is busy, I run a company, I run a VC company, I travel the world. I have children. It’s like I could be in so many different cities so many different times," she stated, emphasizing the challenges of balancing her demanding personal and professional life with strict testing requirements.
ITIA Responds to Player Concerns
The ITIA issued a statement addressing Williams' comments and clarifying its procedures.
The agency explained that if an anti-doping tester is unable to locate a player during their designated one-hour window, it may be recorded as a "strike," and accumulating three such failures could result in a formal charge. However, the ITIA explicitly stated, "If a tester is unable to reach a player outside of their allocated hour, it is not considered a strike."
Furthermore, the ITIA maintained that there have been no recent alterations to the whereabouts rules, adding, "There have been no changes to the whereabouts rules in the last few years."
Acknowledging the difficulties players might face, the agency commented, "We understand the system can seem challenging, but it is there to protect players, not to trip them up. If players are unsure or have questions, we would welcome a conversation with them directly or through their agents."
Despite her voiced frustrations, Williams has consistently affirmed her commitment to adhering to the established regulations.
