Xander Schauffele Reflects on New York Golf Fans' Intensity Amid Recent Controversies

Just months after golf enthusiasts in New York were at the center of debate regarding their conduct during the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black, their spirited displays continued as the PGA Tour returned to the region.

The U.S. Open recently concluded at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, located near the Hamptons. On the final day of the championship, Wyndham Clark found himself largely regarded as the antagonist.

Clark endured a barrage of jeers and catcalls on his path to securing his second U.S. Open title, an uncommon occurrence at professional golf tournaments. One potential reason for the somewhat hostile reception he encountered might have been his pairing with Scottie Scheffler, who was one U.S. Open victory away from achieving a career Grand Slam.

Conversely, some might argue that Clark has, at times, contributed to such reactions himself. He was previously barred from Oakmont Country Club after damaging a locker and has been involved in other on-course outbursts and allegations of bending the rules.

Schauffele commented on Clark's demeanor, stating,

"I thought he handled it incredibly well and, like he even mentioned in his interview, he kind of used that as fuel to play even better and sort of prove it to himself more than anyone else."

Schauffele further noted that the negative reception Clark received in Canada for wearing a Jack Hughes jersey was “more lighthearted than what was happening to him in New York,” prompting discussions about whether professional golfers should continue to compete in the New York metropolitan area.

The disturbances led Golf Channel's Eamon Lynch to label Long Island golf fans a “stain” on the sport, suggesting they “don’t deserve” to host major championships. The challenging experience faced by Rory McIlroy and Team Europe last September at Bethpage Black remains a recent memory.
