House Democrats Address Questions on Democratic Socialists' Agenda to Reshape U.S. Institutions

Members of the U.S. House of Representatives from the Democratic party recently faced questions regarding a new policy agenda put forth by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). The organization's proposed platform, titled "Workers Deserve More," outlines a radical restructuring of America's political framework, including the elimination of the Senate, the presidency, and the Supreme Court.

When asked about these far-reaching proposals, Representative Ro Khanna, a Democrat from California, stated, "I don’t support that." He added, "I haven’t read the proposal."

Similarly, Representative Pete Aguilar, also a California Democrat, distanced himself from the plan. "I'm not a member of the DSA, so I can't comment on any documents that they put out," Aguilar remarked.

Democratic Socialists' Proposed Institutional Overhaul

The "Workers Deserve More" platform, a revised document from the DSA, calls for fundamental changes to the U.S. governmental system. A central tenet is the complete abolishment of the Senate. In its place, the proposal envisions a unicameral, proportionally representative legislature. Furthermore, it advocates for the replacement of the current presidential and Supreme Court systems with a parliamentary structure, where the executive branch and judiciary would be elected by and subservient to the legislative body.

The program's political objectives are delineated in three sections, with the final section explicitly stating its goals, which include "a unicameral, proportional legislature (abolishing the Senate) and a parliamentary system (abolishing the presidency), among other goals."

Far-Reaching Immigration and Defense Policy Changes

Beyond governmental structure, the DSA platform also outlines a series of drastic reforms concerning immigration and national defense. The organization calls for the total abolishment of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), a stance it has publicly championed since 2018. The agenda also proposes:

• An immediate cessation of all deportations.
• Pardoning all immigrants, including those who have committed criminal offenses.
• Extending full voting rights to individuals with criminal convictions and noncitizens.
• Easing restrictions on international migration control.

Additionally, the "Workers Deserve More" plan advocates for defunding the Department of War, a term historically used for the Department of Defense.

Democratic Lawmakers' Responses and DSA's Growing Influence

The unveiling of this left-leaning agenda coincides with a noticeable trend of socialist principles gaining more visibility within the mainstream Democratic party. A number of candidates who identify as members of the DSA or as socialists have successfully defeated more moderate Democratic rivals in various primary elections this year.

Despite the radical nature of the DSA's platform, Representative Aguilar expressed an openness to collaboration across the party. "I look forward to working with all our colleagues who run as Democrats," he stated.

In a statement published in Democratic Left, the DSA's official magazine, the organization detailed the specific requirements for socialist candidates seeking its endorsement. The "Workers Deserve More" program will play a formal role in this national candidate endorsement process. According to the resolution that introduced the new platform, candidates are "expected to accept and promote DSA’s program, and align their own campaign platforms with its contents to the best of their ability."
