Representative Ilhan Omar, a Minnesota Democrat, has secured her party's nomination in Tuesday's primary election, positioning her to seek a fifth term representing the state's 5th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives.

The incumbent congresswoman, who was born in Somalia, faced four less prominent contenders for the Democratic nomination. These included Julie Trang Le, a former federal immigration prosecutor; Abena McKenzie, a nurse who had previously challenged Omar in the 2024 primary, where she garnered less than half a percent of the vote; Latonya Reeves, a Democratic National Committee member and long-standing activist running from a more centrist position; and Nate Schluter, a political newcomer with a minimal presence in the race.

Despite the field of challengers, none were considered a serious threat to Omar. She has firmly established her role in Congress by appealing to the increasingly progressive electorate within her district, which is notable for hosting the largest concentration of Somali Americans nationwide.
