Italian Authorities Intercept Massive $290 Million Cocaine Shipment Hidden in Banana Container

Italian authorities successfully intercepted a substantial narcotics shipment, seizing approximately 1,700 pounds of cocaine meticulously hidden within a cargo of bananas at a prominent port. Officials announced the significant discovery on Tuesday.

The illicit drugs were distributed into 650 individual packages and "skillfully concealed" inside a refrigerated shipping container. This vessel had arrived at the port of Vado Ligure, situated in the Liguria region, after its journey from one of Ecuador’s primary ports.

A preliminary field examination conducted during the inspection process confirmed the seized substance was "extremely pure cocaine," according to official statements. Had this extensive shipment reached its intended destinations on the black market, its estimated value could have exceeded 250 million euros, translating to nearly $290 million.

Major Anti-Drug Operation in Italy

Law enforcement described the operation as one of the most substantial anti-drug efforts carried out at the Vado Ligure port in recent years. The seizure itself was the culmination of an intensive analysis of commercial maritime routes connecting South American nations with Vado Ligure, a crucial entry point for goods into the European continent. This strategic location also renders it an "attractive" target for international drug trafficking networks, as noted by officials.

"The operation forms part of an ongoing and targeted effort to combat the international trafficking of narcotics, including efforts to protect the most vulnerable segments of the population, who are often exposed to the harmful effects of this type of criminal activity," the Guardia di Finanza stated.

Recent U.S. Border Cocaine Interception

This recent European interdiction follows a separate significant seizure just weeks prior in the United States, where U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers uncovered a large quantity of cocaine.

At the Pharr Port of Entry in Texas, more than 1,100 pounds of cocaine were discovered secreted within a commercial tractor-trailer that was transporting cabbage. A specialized canine unit and a nonintrusive imaging scan both alerted officers to the presence of the hidden contraband. A subsequent physical search of the trailer revealed 477 packages, collectively containing 1,173 pounds of cocaine, with an estimated street value approaching $10.8 million.
