Colorado Primary Winner's 9/11 Comments Spark Controversy Among Conservatives

Following her primary election win on Tuesday evening in Colorado’s first congressional district, Melat Kiros has drawn significant scrutiny from conservatives and online commentators regarding her past remarks about the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Republican strategist Steve Guest commented on the development, stating that it was “light-years worse” than the rise of progressive figures like Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who defeated a long-serving incumbent. Guest further asserted that such candidates represent “the Democrat party.”

Kiros has previously indicated that the United States might have contributed to the circumstances leading to the 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center, which resulted in nearly 3,000 American fatalities. These remarks, alongside other statements perceived as rationalizing violent acts, have ignited considerable criticism as she advances toward potentially securing a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, signaling a potential strengthening of the Democratic Party's far-left wing. During an interview, when questioned about the avoidability of the 9/11 attacks, Kiros expressed her conviction that U.S. foreign policy rendered them “inevitable.” She elaborated, “Inevitable in the sense that we destabilized a lot of the Middle East. That forced people to believe that another act of violence was the only response.” The Republican National Committee (RNC) condemned these comments online, labeling them “SICK!”

Growing Concern Over Party Direction

Conservative media figure Benny Johnson cited Kiros's victory as an indicator that the Democratic Party is increasingly embracing candidates with extreme viewpoints. Johnson remarked, “She is a socialist who was born in Ethiopia. Melat also thinks America deserved 9/11. It isn’t just happening in New York; Democrats are losing their entire party,” implying a broader trend of socialist candidates succeeding. Representative Mike Lawler, a Republican from New York, shared a similar perspective, stating, “One radical lunatic after the next is coming to Washington. Why would we ever want to empower someone who believes 9/11 is America’s fault?”

Kiros's Policy Platform and Controversial Stances

Kiros's campaign website outlines a platform that aligns with several progressive tenets, including advocating for Medicare-for-all, an end to “all wars,” the abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and universal childcare. In a campaign video, Kiros stated, “As someone who’s working as a barista to pay for school and health care, I know what it’s like to work so hard to get ahead while Washington is so far behind.” However, it is her positions on Israel and U.S. foreign policy that have particularly distinguished her from many other candidates.

A Ph.D. student and lawyer, Kiros was dismissed from a New York legal firm in 2023 following the publication of an open letter. In this letter, she contended that student protesters advocating against Israel and calling for its elimination were not antisemitic, and she also appeared to defend Hamas. Furthermore, Kiros has characterized the October 7, 2023, attacks on Israel as the “inevitable consequence of apartheid.” She also refrained from labeling a fatal firebombing incident in Boulder last year—which targeted protesters calling for the release of hostages held by Hamas in Gaza—as antisemitic. In a recent television interview with Colorado's 9News, Kiros explained her stance on the Boulder incident: “I don't know what was in the heart of the perpetrator. All I know is that he went and attacked innocent people because of what they might have believed.”

Broader Political Implications

Conservative commentator Clay Travis expressed concerns that Kiros's win could fuel further momentum for the far-left across the country. Travis noted, “That’s four incumbents losing primaries to socialists in a week. Every state now has a Mamdani [and] the Democrat Party is on a rapid descent to Communism,” suggesting a widespread shift. Kiros is now set to compete against Republican challenger Christy Peterson, a local accountant, in the general election scheduled for November 3.
