Venezuela Earthquake: 33 Rescued Amid Fading Hope for Nearly 50,000 Missing
Rescue operations continue along Venezuela's northern coast after powerful earthquakes, though the critical 72-hour survival window has elapsed for thousands trapped.

Search and rescue teams operating in Venezuela successfully extracted 33 individuals from the debris of collapsed structures over the weekend, following a pair of devastating earthquakes that struck the nation's northern coastal region. However, officials and aid organizations issued a somber warning on Sunday that the critical window for finding survivors was rapidly closing, with nearly 50,000 people still unaccounted for.
By late Saturday, the confirmed death toll had reached 1,430, according to information from The Associated Press. Additionally, Venezuelan authorities reported that more than 3,000 people sustained injuries, and approximately the same number are currently residing in emergency shelters.
Urgent Rescue Efforts Underway
Among those rescued were an infant, pulled alive from the rubble by a U.S. rescue team, an 11-year-old boy located by a Colombian crew approximately 10 feet beneath the surface after being detected by a scanner, and another 11-year-old saved by Mexican emergency responders in Caraballeda.
Acting President Delcy Rodríguez acknowledged the gravity of the situation, stating on social media platform X after one of the successful operations, "In these hours each life is hope for Venezuela."
Sebastian Eugster, who leads a Swiss rescue team, informed Reuters that the likelihood of discovering survivors dramatically diminishes after approximately 72 hours trapped beneath debris. This crucial timeframe expired on Saturday evening.
"There exists a window of roughly three days, 72 hours, where the probability afterwards decreases that you can save people alive," Eugster explained.
Widespread Devastation and Uncertain Toll
The most severe destruction is concentrated in the coastal state of La Guaira, where entire residential complexes, hotels, and public housing buildings suffered catastrophic collapse after magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 tremors hit within a short period on Wednesday. Hundreds of subsequent aftershocks have continued to destabilize damaged areas, impeding rescue operations and forcing those who survived to remain outdoors in the intense heat.
The exact number of missing individuals remains highly fluid and uncertain. While government statements have referred to hundreds missing or trapped, some estimates on Sunday placed the figure just under 50,000, a decrease from 55,000 reported the previous day. The Associated Press noted that families had submitted lists of 68,900 missing individuals by Saturday, underscoring the chaotic conditions in documenting fatalities, displaced populations, and those cut off due to communication failures.
Connectivity and International Support
As the desperate survival window receded with each passing day, Starlink has stepped in to provide vital communication services for the unfolding humanitarian crisis.
"Starlink Mobile is providing free connectivity to @MovistarVe customers in the La Guaira region, and we are working to provide free service for @DigitelAyuda and @movilnet_ve customers as quickly as possible," Starlink announced on X on Sunday. "Families, communities and businesses with compatible LTE smartphones can now stay connected through SMS even if terrestrial networks are not available and customer phones will automatically connect to Starlink Mobile. Coverage will work best with a clear view of the sky."
On Sunday, Pope Leo extended his solidarity to the survivors and the families of victims who cling to hope. Speaking in Spanish before congregants gathered for the Angelus prayer in Rome, the pontiff conveyed, "I wish to express my closeness to the Venezuelan sisters and brothers affected by the recent earthquakes that caused numerous victims and injuries."
